Each year Meals On Wheels delivers over 900,000 meals to homebound seniors throughout San Francisco. Each day seniors who have limited ability to shop or cook receive two nutritious meals (14 per week) or 2/3 of their required nutrition. Ninety-six percent of our seniors are low income with the majority living on less than $1,000 per month of income.

For many homebound seniors the driver delivering the meal each day might be the only person visiting that senior for weeks at a time. In addition to meals and frequent visits from our drivers, our clients receive full support from our social work team, our nutritionists, and an active base of volunteers who attempt to reduce isolation through friendly visits, help with shopping and other chores.

Eighty-three cents of every dollar donated to MOWSF goes directly to providing meals and supportive services to our homebound seniors, making Meals On Wheels one of the most efficient and effective charities in the Bay Area.

The cost of placing a senior in the hospital is approximately $4,000 per day. Meals On Wheels is able to provide the food and supportive services that allows seniors to remain in their homes or apartments for a cost of slightly more than $11 per day or $4,329 a year. That’s a great investment. For the cost of one day in the hospital, we can provide a full year of service preventing premature institutionalization and ensuring some independence for seniors as they age in place.

$4,329 will support a homebound senior for an entire year
