Volunteer
Volunteers are at the heart of our mission. We have many skilled employees who care for our isolated seniors and provide them necessary resources. However, our elders need neighborly one-on-one friendship, a service only committed volunteers can provide.
- Friendly Visitor/ Grocery Shopper
Homebound seniors are matched with a volunteer to lessen senior isolation. Volunteers make regular visits and may take a senior on a walk, play cards, watch movies, read aloud or simply enjoy a good conversation. Volunteers also help by shopping for personal care items when seniors are unable to go to the store themselves.
- Client Needs Volunteers
Our clients need small repairs and installation in their homes. Handy volunteers install microwaves, replace light bulbs, help with computers, and much more. These may seem like small tasks, but for our clients, they represent a major quality of life improvement. And, they love seeing our volunteers’ friendly faces!
- Delivery Assistant
Be part of bringing food to our clients by assisting our staff drivers during the week. It’s a great opportunity to meet our clients, and provide a vital service, ensuring the safe, efficient and friendly delivery of our meals to seniors throughout the city.
- Holiday Programs
Each year, we mobilize community volunteers to deliver a turkey dinner to over 1,000 San Francisco seniors. Many families have made this special day of deliveries part of their own Thanksgiving tradition. During the winter holidays, volunteers at local corporations and businesses lead gift drives and donate socks, slippers and personal care items for holiday gift bags. Volunteers assemble and organize the gift bags for delivery.
- Special Events
Volunteers help at fundraising events to raise support and awareness for San Francisco’s seniors. They assist with every aspect of the events, including set-up, registration, auction support, guest relations and chef and winery assistance. Our major events are our Chefs & Vintners Gala in May, but we have other events throughout the year as well.
- Office Assistants, Professional Services & Internships
We are often in need of a variety of assistance at our Bayview office, from filing and data entry to helping manage our website. We need your special skills. Also, we have many opportunities to learn and gain valuable experience in the areas of nutrition, social work and non-profit development. Ask us about our current opportunities.
- Corporate Groups
Meals On Wheels offers terrific opportunities for corporate volunteerism and team building. Small groups come to our offices and spend a day making personal birthday cards for our seniors, many of whom are extremely isolated. It’s a great way to connect and make a personal gesture to our seniors.
- Cards & Holiday Placemats
During holidays and throughout the year, we invite young and old alike to bring their creative energy to making cards and placemats that brighten the day of a senior.
- Opportunities for Children & Youth
We have lots of ways for kids and families to participate, as friendly visitor or grocery shoppers, participating in holiday programs, and making cards and placemats.
