Eating Well on a Budget May Get Easier for Seniors

A law that takes effect June 1 this year may affect you. If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) you will be able to apply for CalFresh and possibly receive extra money for your groceries.

Since 1974, low-income Californians who qualified for SSI have not been able to receive food stamps (now called CalFresh.) CalFresh is a free nutrition assistance program for low-income individuals and families.

In San Francisco, the law will allow nearly 40,000 elderly and disabled SSI recipients to apply for benefits. Those who qualify may be eligible to receive as much as $192 per month to spend on groceries.

Approximately 74 percent of Meals on Wheels clients living in San Francisco live at or below the Federal Poverty Level making their decision between purchasing healthy food or paying their bills a difficult choice. CalFresh may provide some extra relief.

Learn more by calling the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank at (415) 549-7021 to see if you qualify and to apply, or visit: www.calfreshfood.org.
