Delivering more than Meals
October 12, 2018Marie J. Nedich

Each day, all across San Francisco, Meals on Wheels lovingly delivers two meals to over 4,000 homebound seniors (a grand total of 2 million meals a year!). In a booming city with a large senior population, a nutritious meal and human interaction makes waves of difference within the community.

Tommy Evans helped launch Twitter’s participation in the Meals on Wheels Adopt-a-Building Program. Beginning in October 2017, Twitter began delivering meals one day per week and quickly expanded to twice per week. It all started with a #TwitterForGood Day.

Twice a year, Twitter organizes a #TwitterForGood Day where employees build community within their local neighbors through volunteer service events.

On November 2016, Evans led a project with Meals on Wheels:

“We put together holiday gift bags with about a dozen of us. A couple of weeks later, Meals on Wheels asked us if we want to deliver the gift bags to local residents. Things spiraled and now I’m a lead for the Adopt-a-Building program.”

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, Tommy and a team of Twitter volunteers deliver 8-12 meals to low-income seniors in the Edith Witt Senior Community Center. The contribution is impactful not just for the clients but for Tommy as well, “Volunteering takes a few minutes out of my day, and it brings me humility and perspective.”

The Adopt-a-Building Program focuses on clients in the Mid-Market, South of Market, and Tenderloin neighborhoods of San Francisco. It benefits the organization overall by giving time back to the drivers and allows MoWSF to focus on its clients and building additional services. Other companies that participate in the program include: Dolby, Zendesk, and Salesforce.
